Cavendish Farms Supports Salmon Are Our Friends Program with a New Four-Year Partnership

April 30, 2026

Cavendish Farms is proud to partner with Abegweit First Nation to support the launch of its annual Fish Friends School Program, Salmon Are Our Friends.

Celebrated at a community gathering at the Abegweit Connects Building in Scotchfort, Prince Edward Island, the launch brought together community leaders, program partners, educators, and students to recognize a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and learning. Salmon Are Our Friends offers an interactive learning opportunity by allowing students to raise Atlantic salmon from eggs in classroom aquariums before releasing them into local rivers, while learning about conservation and Mi’kmaq connections to land and water.

“Abegweit First Nation is proud to continue offering this hands-on learning experience to Island schools, teaching students the importance of conservation and connection to land and water. We are grateful to our program sponsors, Cavendish Farms and North Lake Fisheries, whose support will have a lasting impact on schools across the Island,” said Chief Junior Gould of Abegweit First Nation.

Reaching approximately 22 schools and more than 550 students each year, the program will expand through a new four-year partnership with Cavendish Farms and North Lake Fisheries, each contributing $25,000 annually to support increased participation and provide essential equipment to schools across Prince Edward Island.

“For Cavendish Farms, Salmon Are Our Friends is more than an educational program, it’s about building meaningful relationships. This initiative brings students, communities, and conservation together in a hands-on way that creates lasting impact. We’re proud to support a program that invests in young people, honours Indigenous culture, and protects our waterways right here on Prince Edward Island,” said Mark Cormier, Vice President of Government and Community Relations.
